A Day on The Straight Talk Express: A Strange Day Indeed

The Straight Talk Express Parked Between Two "No Parking" Signs

The following events took place aboard John McCain’s Straight Talk Express on Friday, November 9th between the hours of 8:30 am and 8:00pm

8:45am: Reporters loaded The Straight Talk Express with John McCain and Tom Ridge. McCain said he would not have appointed Bernie Kerik to be the Secretary of Homeland Secretary because of “his irresponsible act in Baghdad when he was suppose to be training the police.”

9:30pm: Reporters loaded back onto bus with McCain. McCain says that Rudy’s stance on torture demonstrates Rudy’s lack of experience. “It's a fundamental lack of experience, knowledge of, I mean it's great to have lead a major city. I mean his post-crisis handling was fine. But that certainly doesn't mean you're qualified to lead.” McCain also said that his campaign has not decided to take federal matching funds.

11:15pm: After some downtime, we hop back onto the bus. On the way to the next stop, a reporter said that McCain had a “squeaky clean” record. McCain refutes the characterization saying “You know I’d totally love to agree with you, remember I’m one of the Keating 5." Jokingly McCain added, "Why Did I remind him of that? Jesus, God, how could I have been that stupid?”

2:30pm: On the way to Meredith, the McCain campaign was approached with an Associated Press story that states McCain is set to take out a massive campaign loan, and possibly take matching funds. The story also reports outside group has begun airing ads that positively reflect McCain’s record. “Financed mainly by McCain backers, the Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America was created with the help of Republican ad maker Rick Reed.” The campaign also moved reporters to the front of the bus, leaving McCain with supporters and staffers.

5:15pm: Appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball, John McCain’s mother said “As far as the Salt Lake City thing, he's a Mormon and the Mormons of Salt Lake City had caused that scandal. And to clean that up, again, it's not a subject.”

7:00pm: After some downtime, reporters headed over to a house party, in separate vehicles. Outside the house party, I introduced myself to McCain too which he responds, “I’ve been telling people, for weeks, that you have to get off your ass.”

8:00pm: After the house party, reporters are moved to the McCain bus, McCain and his staffers take another vehicle to Concord. Reporters are stuck watching The Wizard of Oz and The Bourne Identity.

Also at some point during the day, Meagan McCain issues a clarification on her post about candidate daughters. In her original post, Meagan wrote, “hasn’t the blonde bimbo thing run its course.” Meagan later wrote that she was referring to Paris Hilton, not Jenna Bush.

Overall, it was an interesting day on The Straight Talk Express, to say the least.

Here's What I Missed Yesterday

Marc Ambinder finds "Two new reputable polls of New Hampshire Democratic Primary voters will show statistically significant drops in support for frontrtunner Hillary Clinton, Democrats who have seen those polls said today."

While The Politicker reports that "Barack Obama has just picked up a fairly important endorsement in New Hampshire. Lenore Patton is the chairwoman of the Rockingham County Democrats and-- like every other party leader in NH -- had been relentlessly courted by the Clinton campaign. Rockingham is one of the largest and most Democratic of NH's 10 counties -- it has a population of over 200,000, accounting for about 1 in 6 NH residents."

And Mitt Romney picks-up the support of BAE's Rich Ashooh.

Another HillStar

From The Clinton Campaign:

The New Hampshire for Hillary Campaign today announced Mike Sheehy as the campaign’s HillStar of the Week. Sheehy, a Hollis resident, has helped make phone calls in his local campaign office, and also volunteered at Senator Clinton’s “Organizing for Change” event in Nashua on November 7 .

“I’m supporting Hilary because I believe her strength, drive, and toughness make her the best candidate to be our next president,” said Sheehy, a Vietnam veteran.

McCain Questions Rudy's Level of Experience

This morning, while talking to reporters on the Straight Talk Express, Senator John McCain questioned Rudy Giuliani's level of experience.

When discussing Rudy's stance on torture, McCain said,

"It's a fundamental lack of experience, knowledge of, I mean it's great to have lead a major city. I mean his post-crisis handling was fine. But that certainly doesn't mean you're qualified to lead."

McCain also said that that it "means he clearly doesn't understand the moral implications of torturing someone."

The Arizona Senator said that he would not have appointed Bernie Kerik to be the Secretary of Homeland Security because Kerik failed to train the Iraqi police forces.

"I would never have supported him to be Secretary of Homeland Secretary because of his irresponsible act in Baghdad."

Kerik was suggested to be Secretary by Rudy Giuliani. The former New York City police chief will soon be indicted for a serious of white-collar crimes.

Biden Calls Richardson's Foreign Policy "All Over The Board"

After announcing his policy on Pakistan, Delaware Senator Joe Biden criticized Bill Richardson’s stance on Iraq.

“Bill has been so all over the board on his foreign policy. First he endorsed the Biden plan on getting out of Iraq, then he says get them all out in three months, then he says he no six months, then he says no a year and now it’s back to whatever it is.”

“I think Bill is banking on that portion of the Democratic Party that just wants to hear get out tomorrow or yesterday,” Biden said.

When asked if it is irresponsible for Richardson to argue he could pull all the troops out of Iraq, Biden added, “I think Bill knows that you can’t get the forces out.”

When asked about his lack of campaigning in the Granite State, Biden said “I have not pulled out my people like John Edwards has, I have not pulled out my people like the Governor has, I have not pulled out my people like Dodd has, to the best of my knowledge. We still have an organization that we’re building.”

Rasmussen: Romney Leads in the Granite State

A new Rasmussen poll shows Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney opening a big lead in New Hampshire.

"Romney now has support from 32% of Likely Primary Voters. That figure matches his highest level of support of the season and is up from 28% a month ago.

Rudy Giuliani attracts 17% of those voters, down a couple of points from the last survey. Giuliani’s support has ranged from 17% to 22% in five Rasmussen Reports polls of this race.

John McCain at 16% and Mike Huckabee at 10% are the only other Republicans in double digits. Their totals have not changed since the October survey.

Fred Thompson now attracts just 7% of the vote and is trailed by Ron Paul (4%) Tom Tancredo (3%), and Duncan Hunter (2%). Ten percent (10%) remain undecided."

Biden Calls For "New Approach to Pakistan"

This morning at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College in Manchester, Sen. Joe Biden delivered a major foreign policy address calling for a "new approach to Pakistan." Below are excerpts from the speech.

"But unlike Iran, Pakistan already has nuclear weapons.

"It is hard to imagine a greater nightmare for America than the world's second-largest Muslim nation becoming a failed state in fundamentalist hands, with an arsenal of nuclear weapons and a population larger than those of Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea combined.

"To prevent that nightmare from becoming a reality, I believe we need to do three things:

"First, deal pro-actively with the current crisis. Second, and for the longer term, move from a Musharraf policy to a Pakistan policy that gives the moderate majority a chance to succeed. And third, help create conditions in the region that maximize the chances of success, and minimize the prospects for failure."

Kucinich Leads in New Hampshire Grassroots Poll

From The Kucinich Campaign:

Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich topped all other Democratic Presidential candidates in 47 of 50 states in the first nationwide poll of grassroots, activist Democrats, according to final figures released today by the Howard Dean-founded Democracy for America (DFA) political action committee.

In Iowa and New Hampshire, widely regarded as bellwether states because of their early positions in balloting, Kucinich scored stunning victories over former Senator John Edwards, Senator Barack Obama, and touted front-runner Senator Hillary Clinton.

In Iowa, Kucinich captured more than 24% of the vote from among nine Democratic candidates, including write-in Al Gore, coming in ahead of second-place Edwards and third-place Obama. In New Hampshire, the first in the nation primary election, Kucinich scored almost 34% of the votes, more than Edwards and Obama combined.

312 New Hampshire Educators Endorse Clinton

From The Clinton Campaign:

In a yet another demonstration of the growing support Senator Hillary Clinton is receiving throughout the Granite State, the New Hampshire for Hillary campaign today announced the names of 312 Educators for Hillary.

“Hillary Clinton has a clear understanding of the improvements that need to be made in our education system,” Karen McDonough, former President of the National Education Association of New Hampshire and Co-chair of Education Leaders for Hillary. “She is actively working to establish universal pre-kindergarten, fully fund programs such as No Child Left Behind and Head Start, and make higher education accessible and affordable.”

As an advocate, First Lady, and United States Senator, Hillary has fought to raise the education standards in our nation’s schools. Hillary is committed to reforming No Child Left Behind (NCLB). In addition to fighting for full funding for NCLB, she is working to ensure the legislation supports early childhood education, improves teacher training, lowers class size, enhances parental involvement, eliminates environmental hazards in schools, and protects the programs that work for America ’s children.

Edwards Proposes Plan To Make Safer Imports

From The Edwards Campaign:

Today, Senator John Edwards detailed his latest proposals for protecting children and families from unsafe imports at forum with students at a middle school in Amherst, New Hampshire. Edwards unveiled his plans for protecting Americans from dangerous toys, strengthening food safety, ensuring that drug imports are safe, and taking on special interests to put Washington back on the side of regular families.

"America is facing a crisis of quality in imported products, food and medicine," Edwards said. "We can no longer rely on corporations to initiate recall after recall while our government sits on the sidelines and our nation's children and families remain at serious risk. Multinational corporations' race to cut costs by offshoring the production of drugs, toys and other consumer goods has come at the price of quality and safety."

Today's plan will:

· Put Washington Back on the Side of Regular Families
· Protect American Children from Unsafe Toys
· Keep America's Food Safe
· Ensure Safe Drug Imports

Edwards Outlines Plan To Deal With Iran

Yesterday, John Edwards outlined a five-point strategy to contain Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"As a nation, we stand today at a fork in the road with Iran. We have a real choice about the direction we’ll take. One path will replay the last seven years. It leads toward a dark future of belligerence, aggression, and war. We need a new direction—one that will defuse the Iran threat, rather than aggravate it, one that will make America safer, not make the world more dangerous," Edwards said in a campaign press release.

Here is the Edwards plan:

-First and foremost, end the preventive war doctrine.
-Second, use tougher and more targeted economic sanctions to force Iran’s leaders to understand that they cannot continue to buck the will of the international community without destroying their ability to be a modern, advanced nation.
-Third, use incentives to convince Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and re-join the world community.
-Fourth, reengage with Iran using a new multi-level diplomatic approach.
-Fifth, reengage with other major nations like Russia and China on the challenges facing Iran.

Edwards Launches Ad on 'Heroes'

From The Edwards Campaign:

Today, the John Edwards for President campaign launched a new ad in New Hampshire entitled 'Heroes.' In the ad, Edwards reaffirms his commitment to honoring and fighting for America's true heroes – the working men and women of our country. The ad features footage of Edwards speaking at a campaign event, interspersed with images of hardworking Americans.

Full Transcript of Ad:

If you're looking for heroes, don't look to me. Don't look to Elizabeth. We have support. We have health care. We have the American people behind us.

Look to them. They are the ones who we speak for. They are the ones that we stand up for.

And Elizabeth and I decided, in the quiet of a hospital room, after 12 hours of tests and after getting very bad news, what we were going to spend our lives doing, for all those that have no voice.

We're not going to quietly go away. Instead we're going to go out and fight for what it is we believe in.

It is time for our party, the Democratic Party, to show a little backbone, to have a little guts. To stand up for working men and women. If we are not their voice they will never have a voice.

I'm John Edwards and I approve this message.

Obama Campaign Events

Here's a look at some events that Barack Obama's campaign is sponsoring this week:

"Join the Movement"Canvasses
On Saturday, November 10, the campaign will hold more than 30 "Join the Movement" canvasses. In Concord, Keene, Littleton, Merrimack, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire supporters will be joined by volunteers from Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts to talk about Barack's vision for real change.

Healthcare Forums
At forums in Rochester on Tuesday and Portsmouth on Wednesday, New Hampshire voters will hear from campaign policy experts about Obama's plan to insure every American and cut the typical family's healthcare costs by up to $2,500 each year.

Representative Cindy Rosenwald will also host a healthcare house party in Nashua on Thursday.

Educators for Obama House Parties
New Hampshire Educators for Obama will host house parties around the state to discuss Barack's commitment to making our education system competitive in a global economy.

Community Outreach
Obama staff and volunteers will continue give back to the communities where they live and work. In Berlin on Wednesday, Obama volunteers will lend a hand to the local senior meals program. And while canvassing in Nashua on Saturday, supporters will collect canned and non-perishable food items to donate to the Nashua Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen.

McCain Vet Chair Slams Rudy

U.S. Senator John McCain's New Hampshire Veterans Advisory Committee Chair Sergeant Major Paul Chevalier, USMC (Ret.), today issued the following statement:

"Last week, Rudy Giuliani implied that he had experienced the torture of sleep deprivation while running for president. His hyperbole is an insult to all American soldiers who have had to endure real torture and mistreatment while in enemy hands. This practice was common during the Vietnam War. One of John McCain's closest friends, LtCol. Orson Swindle, USMC (Ret.), was subjected to this treatment while he was held as a P.O.W. in North Vietnam and can personally assure Mayor Giuliani that the experience was far more severe than the loss of sleep he experiences as a candidate. I call on Mayor Giuliani to apologize to LtCol. Swindle and all of our courageous veterans who have had to persevere through this heinous experience as well as other torturous acts while serving their country and recognize how he belittled that service and sacrifice through his comments."

Giuliani/Huckabee Ticket?

Here are some bullentpoints to a question Rudy received on whether or not he'd consider Mike Huckabee to be his Vice-President

-Are you his campaign manager? Want to come up here and we can make a deal?
- I have no idea who’d I pick to be vice-president
-I really respect Mike…the man’s got a great sense of humor
-first thing you do is pick somebody who could be president of the United States.
-In the age of terrorism, the Vice-President has got to be a full partner
-can’t have the same thing that happened with Roosevelt and Truman

Rudy on Democratic Policies

Rudy statements on Democratic policies:

"If you sent a baby a bond from the government aren’t you saying that the government will take care of you."

"The government can’t take care of you from cradle to grave."

"It’s the whole philosophy and it comes largely from inexperience."

Rudy on Healthcare and Illegal Immigration

Rudy on Healthcare:
“The minute the government makes a mandate the price goes up and the quality goes down.”

Rudy on Illegal Immigration:
"How do we end illegal immigration? We end it at the border."

Rudy Afraid of Being Struck By Lighting

Rudy Giuliani began his remarks at this Benedictine college by stating, "If I look a little shaky, it’s because the last time I was I was almost struck by lighting."

Giuliani was referring to the June Republican debate, in which during his answer on abortion, lighting affected the communications system.

Edwards Campaign Manager Meets with Mill Workers

From The Edwards Campaign:

Edwards for President National Campaign Manager Congressman David Bonior and Edwards endorser Maine Congressman Mike Michaud met with mill workers at the United Steel Workers Local 61 union hall in Groveton, NH today to discuss the mill’s imminent closure and John Edwards’ bold policies to stand up for hardworking Americans in rural towns like Groveton.

“What’s happening in rural towns like Groveton is wrong, and it’s happening because bad trade deals like NAFTA get passed thanks to the powerful voice of moneyed corporate lobbyists,” said Bonior. “As president, John Edwards will take on the special interests that lead to bad trade deals and put our government back to work for the people. He will never sign a trade deal that does not benefit American workers.”

The paper mill in Groveton, which is slated to close this December, will leave 303 mill workers unemployed right before Christmas. This is the second mill in Groveton to close in recent years, and adds to the job loss caused by the recent mill closures in nearby Berlin, NH.
