Romney Comments Criticized By McCain, Huckabee

This weekend almost 400 people spend a Saturday afternoon listening to speeches from John McCain, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Huckabee. The participates of the “Global Warming & Energy Solutions,” heard energy policies from the three presidential candidates.

McCain told the crowd that they participating in a noble cause and said “what you are doing here will never be adequately recognized.”

After his speech, McCain continued his assault on Mitt Romney. Earlier on Saturday McCain told a group of Republicans “As we all know when he ran for office in Massachusetts being a Republican wasn't much of a priority for him.” McCain's comments came a day after Romney told a crowd in Nevada that "conservatives that have heard me time and again recognize that I do speak for the Republican wing of the Republican Party."

Speaking to reporters the Arizona Senator said that Romney’s and Giuliani’s, lack of appearance at the conference was “the crime of the century” and that voters should examine candidates’ voting records, to determine who the ‘real Republican' is.

The debate over Romney’s comments continued with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee said, “I’ve never had to change my position on major Republican concerns, never ran away from Ronald Reagan, never ran away from the second amendment, never ran away from the sanctity of life, never ran away from traditional family values.” He added that “authenticity matters and there’s an authenticity with me.”

In addition, at the same time that McCain launched his attack on Romney, an individual was passing out pamphlets highlighting Romney’s change of position on the second amendment. The literature was passed out at a gun show, which was also taking place at the same venue.

Edwards Delivers "Returning Washington to Regular People" Address

From The Edwards Campaign:

Today, at a town hall in Keene, Senator John Edwards delivered a major policy address unveiling his proposal for Returning Washington to Regular People. Edwards’ three-pronged approach calls for strengthening the voice of ordinary citizens through election reform, reforming campaign finance to strengthen small donors, and ending the unique power of lobbyists.

“The American people are sick and tired of business as usual,” said Edwards. “Lobbyists and the special interests they represent are pouring millions of dollars into the system, corrupting our democracy and stopping the change we need dead in its tracks. With all the money flooding into politics, you’d think that instead of holding elections we were auctioning our leaders off to the highest bidders. Our founding fathers intended our government to do the will of the people, but regular people can’t afford a voice in today’s pay-to-play Washington."

The Edwards plan would:
-Reforming Campaign Finance to Strengthen Small Donors
-Ending the Unique Power of Lobbyists
-Strengthening the Voice of Ordinary Citizens

Obama Supporters "Canvass for Change"

From The Obama campaign:

Hundreds of Obama supporters went door-to-door in 47 towns today to share Senator Obama's plan to turn the page in Iraq as part of our nationwide Canvass for Change. These canvasses come less than two weeks after thousands of Obama supporters across the country highlighted Senator Obama's judgment opposing the Iraq War in 2002 at Rallies for Change.

"Five years ago this week, while other Democrats were lining up behind George Bush, Barack Obama stood to the politics of the moment and opposed the war in Iraq," New Hampshire State Director Matt Rodriguez said. "In 47 towns across the state today—and in towns all across the country—Obama supporters are talking to their neighbors about the judgment we need in our next President. That's how real change happens."

Yesterday, New Hampshire for Hillary campaign released the names of 333 grassroots activists.

We can’t solve the Iraq problem alone and we need Hillary Clinton to be President because she can rebuild credibility worldwide.”

McCain Rolls out Health Care Plan To NH Reporters

On the eve of his eleventh trip to New Hampshire, John McCain laid out his health care plan to Granite State reporters.

Speaking by phone, McCain said "it's not the quality of health care, it's the cost."

"Health care is rapidly becoming unaffordable," "we're facing a perfect storm," he added.

Calling his plan "competition based, free market based," the McCain plan would allow a tax credit of $2,500 to low-income individuals and $5,000 to low-income families who obtain their own insurance. McCain's plan would also encourage the development of cheaper drugs, fitness and wellness education and legal reforms of medical malpractice lawsuits.

The Arizona Senator also criticized Democratic proposals to expand the SCHIP program saying "the way their plan on funding it is bogus." Congressional Democrats plan to pay for an expansion of the child health care program through a tax on cigarettes.

McCain added "after 2012 the program costs drops into an abyss."

McCain will be spending the upcoming weekend with town hall meetings in Amherst and Hopkinton. He will also be speaking at a global warming conference and an AARP forum.

Today is the beginning of our new daily feature called "The Trifecta." The feature will include a short introductory paragraph, followed by news clippings from Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Hope you enjoy!

While Al Gore was busy winning a Nobel Peace Prize, Bill Richardson was unveiling his education policy to a group of Manchester, New Hampshire students. Richardson was able to garner a significant amount of press with his new 60 billion dollar policy. His plan includes scrapping No Child Left Behind, raising starting teacher salaries to $40,000 and eliminating "junk food" from all schools.

The former Clinton UN Ambassador and Secretary of Energy also criticized Hillary Clinton's decision to stay on the Michigan ballot. Richardson told reporters that Hillary "thinks she is the nominee so she doesn't want to alienate Michigan voters."

Iowa:

-John McCain, while rolling out his health care plan, took a swipe at Hillary saying "The solution, my friends, isn't a one-size-fits-all-big government takeover of health care." (McCain rolls out health care plan)
-Michelle Obama told Iowans this week that "The reality is that we need to scrap the game and start over." (Michelle Obama touts husband's experience, seeks to start over in Washington)

New Hampshire:

-Barack Obama sat down with the Concord Monitor and called Hillary a "50 plus one" candidate. (Obama focuses on personality)
-Hillary Clinton unveiled her higher education plan at PSU saying "every child in America should have a shot at going to the best schools in America." (Clinton visits Plymouth State)

South Carolina:

-"Polls now show Jim DeMint as the most popular politician in SC and Mitt Romney is taking full advantage of it in his new SC radio ad." (DeMint featured in new SC Romney ad)
- It will be interesting to see how news of a 430 million dollar deficit impacts the presidential primary (Economists fear huge deficit looms for S.C.)

Obama Begins Airing Energy Ad

Today, Barack Obama's campaign began airing its second New Hampshire television ad. The thirty-second ad is entitled "Quiet," and focuses on Obama's energy message.

The ad begins running tomorrow.

SCRIPT – "Quiet"

I don't accept that we should be still sending eight hundred million dollars a day, part to hostile nations because of our addiction to foreign oil.

And in the bargain we're melting the polar ice caps.

I went to Detroit to insist that we have to increase fuel efficiency standards. Now, I have to admit, the room got kind of quiet.

We can't just tell people what they want to hear.

We need to tell them what they need to hear. We need to tell them the truth.

Clinton Lays Out Innovation Policies

From the Clinton campaign:

Today, Hillary Clinton laid out innovation policies that will create the jobs of the future, stimulate economic growth, and ensure American leadership in new industries. Hillary’s speech builds on the innovation agenda she announced earlier in the year, which will be critical to creating new, high-wage jobs in our global economy. Innovation is part of the economic blueprint for the 21st Century that Hillary is laying out this week to rebuild America’s middle class.

Hillary’s Innovation Agenda Will:
§ Establish a national broadband strategy called Connect America
§ Create a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund
§ Double the budget for basic and applied research at major federal agencies, and encourage more high-risk, high-reward projects
§ Strengthen education from pre-K to post-graduate study
§ Make the R&E tax credit permanent
§ Restore integrity to science policy by ending the Bush Administration’s war on science

Obama At Mack's Apples

The following campaign event summary was submitted by Stacy Hinkley. Stacy attended Barack Obama's Londonderry town hall forum.

10/09/07
There is only one candidate so far in my life that I have felt the need " to do all I can do" for. Today I was not only able to get the day off to show my support for Senator Obama, but had the fun experience of volunteering for the event held at Mack's apples. The crowd was in my opinion mixed and curious. They want to know Senator Obama.

For me , Barack Obama has the essential element of truth. He says it like it is. There seem to be no games played when he talks, no phony cell phone calls from the wife, no say what they want to hear speeches. I am impressed with his style and need to inform the American people about the truth. He is the only reason I am involved in this round of the political process. He is not only a candidate touting hope, but also far stronger than that, he shows us average people we do have a voice, and YES we do count!

Buckley Calls Michigan Primary "Irrelevant"

This is a statement of Ray Buckley, the New Hampshire Democratic Chairman:

"Today's turn of events only further amplifies the fact that the Michigan primary is irrelevant. Our Secretary of State, Bill Gardner, now has more flexibility in his scheduling decision because the Michigan event is no longer a 'similar event' to the New Hampshire primary."

Biden Stands Firm Against Primary Threats

Today, Joe Biden, joined other Democratic presidential candidates, in announcing that he will not be participating in the Michigan Democratic primary.

Biden for President Campaign Manager Luis Navarro released a statement that read "“Today’s decision reaffirms our pledge to respect the primary calendar as established by the DNC and makes it clear that we will not play into the politics of money and Republican machinations that only serve to interfere with the primary calendar."

Biden's New Hampshire chairman, Representative Jim Ryan, echoed those comments.

In an interview with "New Hampshire Presidential Watch," the Franklin State Representative said that the decision is "essentially consistent with where we've been since the primary began."

"Joe Biden was the first candidate to sign the four state pledge and will continue to honor that pledge," he added.

Man From The Land of Lincoln Favors Honest Abe

Today, Barack Obama held a town hall meeting at Londondery's Mack's Apples. After a speech on energy reform, Obama took thirtheen audience questions. The questions touched upon trade with Peru, health care for the uninsured and his decision making process.

When asked who his favorite president is Obama responded, "I’m suppose I’m bias because I’m from Illinois. But there’s a tall skinny guy who Washington folks didn’t have much experience, who served in the state legislature for a few years and Congress before running for President."

Obama added,"I’m a great admirer of Lincoln’s, not because he’s perfect. He was cautious and slow to the cause of emancipation, he was a politician in that sense. He never got too far ahead of the northern states. But he’s somebody who had the capacity to draw on the best of the American people."

In case you can't tell, the photo is a picture of Barack Obama's face cropped onto a picture of Abraham Lincoln.

Senator Estabrook Endorses Clinton

From The Clinton Campaign:

Across New Hampshire signals of Hillary Clinton’s growing support continue and today New Hampshire for Hillary announced that State Senator Iris Estabrook, Senate Vice President for Policy, will be the seventh Granite State Senator to endorse Hillary for President.

“Senator Clinton will be a president who will make sure our government works for American families again,” said Senator Estabrook of Durham. “This is a decision that I did not take lightly, and it is clear to me that she has the deep conviction to make sure the country moves in the direction it needs to go. I fully support Hillary’s agenda to return to a government that works for the people.”

Senator Estabrook was first elected to the New Hampshire Senate in November 2002. Previously, Estabrook served for three terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, where she was Assistant Democratic Leader for Education Policy.

E. Edwards Finishes Two-Day NH Swing

From the Edwards campaign:

Today, Elizabeth Edwards finished a two-day New Hampshire campaign swing, meeting with health care professionals, health care advocates and voters at Graniteroots house parties and town halls to discuss John Edwards’ plan to provide truly universal health care.

“When our president is fighting tooth and nail to cut off health care coverage for children in New Hampshire and across the nation, it’s clear we need big, bold changes,” said Elizabeth . “John was the first candidate to propose truly universal health care, and his leadership has put universal health care front and center for every Democratic candidate in this race.”

Senator Richard Burr Stumps of McCain

On Saturday, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr paid his first trip to the Granite State. Burr spent the day campaigning on behalf of Senator John McCain.

Before speaking at a Hillsborough Republican fundraiser, Burr visited McCain’s Manchester headquarters and met with supporters.

“This election matters, who we put up matters and for that reason I’m not here to campaign against anybody, but I am here to campaign for John McCain,” Burr told a group of 100 Hillsborough Republicans.

The ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee added “Campaigns are about picking the candidate with the right stuff. John McCain has the right stuff to be president.”

Senator Burr was not the only McCain surrogate stumping in New Hampshire. This weekend, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty paid his second visit to the state. Pawlenty spent Columbus Day campaigning in the northern part of the state.

In an interview with “New Hampshire Presidential Watch” Burr recognized the role of the first-in-the-nation primary saying “I understand the importance of the state that casts the first vote, that’s here. I also understand the importance of this election.”

He added that he was supporting the Arizona Senator because “John is tested, he’s proven he has the courage to stand-up to the tough battles. He has the experience to deal with a set of diverse issues.”

Obama Unveils Detailed Energy Plan

Today in Portsmouth, Barack Obama delivered a speech titled "Real Leadership for a Clean Energy Future."

Arguing that "The truth is, our energy problem has become an energy crisis because no matter how well-intentioned the promise – no matter how bold the proposal – they all fall victim to the same Washington politics that has only become more divided and dishonest," Obama laid out a detailed energy plan.

The plan includes reducing foreign oil consumption by 10 million barrels by 2030 and implementing a greenhouse cap-and-trade program.

The plan can be viewed in full HERE.

Michelle Obama Discusses Challenges of Being A Working Mother

Photo Is From: Brian "Cosmo" Lawson

On Friday, Michelle Obama discussed the challenges of being a working mother, well with a group of working mothers. Obama met the group of eleven mothers at Manchester’s Jane & The Beanstalk café and covered a wide variety of issues.

“We’re all just barely keeping our heads above water,” she said referring to the balancing act between family and work.

In addition to keep pace with a hectic campaign schedule, the Vice President for Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago Hospitals said “I still go to Target, I do my own shopping, I’m on the soccer fields and I’m struggling with a career.”

She added that is increasingly hard to rely on traditional support structures and argued that an Obama presidency is necessary for “fundamental change.”

“We need to fundamentally change the game, not just the players. The game is broken and it’s broken for all of us,” she said.

Paul Supporter Submits Video on Stephanopoulos

A New Hampshire supporter of Ron Paul submitted the following video.

According to the supporter, "I noticed something important yesterday- on ABC World News Tonight George Stephanopoulos is now calling Ron Paul a "Dark Horse" candidate and compared him to Mike Huckabee! Stephanopoulos 4 months earlier had previously said to Ron Paul "[win?] - That's not going to happen" -what a change!!"
