Huckabee Announces NH Endorsements

Sorry for being late to this, but Mike Huckabee recently announced two more New Hampshire endorsements. The former Arkansas Governor announced that Strafford County Sheriff Wayne Estes and Dover businessman Dan Philbrick have endorsed Huckabee.

Dodd Names Adds Another State Co-Chair, More Endorsements

Today, Chris Dodd's New Hampshire campaign announced that Dave Lang will serve as a State Co-Chair. The campaign also names several county chairs and additional steering committee members.

Barack Obama's campaign announced today that it has opened regional offices in Lebanon, Laconia and Peterborough. According to the campaign they now have offices in Portsmouth, Rochester, Nashua, Concord, Conway, and Keene, as well as their statewide headquarters in Manchester.

Manchester Citizen Supports Richardson

This morning I received a first. For the first time since this blog started, I received two official "letters to the editor." I've decided to post the shorter letter. This letter is from Manchester citizen Patrick Arnold who is supporting New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

Bill Richardson is the only candidate campaigning the New Hampshire way.Sunday morning, my girlfriend and I went to the Red Arrow for breakfast. During our meal, I turned around to the commotion of voices and cameras and saw Gov. Richardson making his way through the diner. "Hi, I'm Bill Richardson. I'm running for President," he said, extending his hand for a shake. Glad to see him in New Hampshire again, I reminisced about how I saw him in Amherst on July 4 and he was the only Democratic candidate there.

Bill Richardson is speaking to individual voters. That is what New Hampshire demands from candidates. Other candidates host events with thousands of people. That's not the New Hampshire way. The celebrity candidates are not respecting our political traditions. New Hampshirites have never voted for a candidate unless the candidate looks them in the eye and asks for support. I don't understand the hype over these celebrity candidates. They don't get personal.

No celebrity candidate can rival Richardson's experience and record. No celebrity candidate can rival Richardson's fidelity to New Hampshire's traditions. Unlike other candidates, Gov. Richardson gets personal with voters. Isn't that what New Hampshire is about?

Hillary Gains NH Labor Endorsement

Prominent NH Blogger Endorses Dodd

Dean Barker, one of the founders of the popular website Blue Hampshire, has endorsed Senator Chris Dodd. Barker wrote that he decided to endorse Dodd because of his energy plan, commitment to end the war in Iraq and promise to restore the constitution.

In his endorsement post, Barker wrote "Four years ago, Howard Dean used to talk about the "great restoration of American values." When I envision a Dodd presidency, I see that."

Most Interesting Part of The Night

One of the most interesting parts from last night was having the opportunity to watch Fred Thompson's appearance on Jay Leno, while standing with next to Fergus Cullen and Drew Cline.

Let's just say, it did not look like Chairman Cullen appreciated Thompson's comment about it being easier to get into a NH debate then it is to get onto Leno.

Also, during the debate I got to sit with Dr. Dante Scala and Bill Siroty.

Robert Haines Removed From Press Center

Presidential candidate Robert Haines, who showed up in the press center, wearing a cowboy outfit has been forcefully removed from the press center. When leaving he gave a a thumbs-up to which a reporter gave him a thumbs-up.

Press Laughs At McCain Line

Here are the responses about Fred Thompson's entry into the race and his no-show at the debate:

Huckabee: I was scheduled to be on Jay Leno tonight, but I gave up my slot for somebody else because I'd rather be in New Hampshire with these fine people. …maybe Senator Thompson will be known as the no-show for the presidential debates

Paul: he will help dilute the vote for my benefit...because he will be pro-war and I'm the anti-war candidate representing the Republican traditional position.

McCain: Maybe we’re up past his bedtime. (Press center lots ofs “ohhs” and laughs)

Romney: Maybe January, February might be a better time to make a final decision about getting in this race.

Rudy: I think he's done a pretty good job of playing my part on "Law & Order."…I think this is a nomination you have to earn, though. Nobody's going to give it to you.

Time Just Stood Still

Time in the press room just stood still.

The Fred Thompson ad came on and there was an erry silence in the room.

Once the ad was finished the pundits quickly resumed their conversations.

Clinton To Begin Airing Ad Titled "Change"

Tomorrow, Hillary Clinton's campaign will begin airing their first New Hampshire television ad on WMUR and cable channels. The 30 second ad is entitled "Change" and focuses on Clinton's commitment to end the war in Iraq, provide universal healthcare, veterans healthcare and becoming energy independent. The ad also features footage from her Concord and Portsmouth labor day weekend rallies.

According to a campaign press release, the ad will be "touting Hillary’s experiences as a change agent."

Here is a transcript and the ad:

"We will change things in this country. Because we want it. Because we have one candidate who spent her life fighting for it. Standing up for our families, our children, our veterans."

"We will end this war. We will give health coverage to everyone. We will be energy independent."

The Clinton campaign has announced that they will begin airing their first New Hampshire ad this week. The ad will be unveiled today during a conference call with NH for Hillary Co-chair Speaker Terie Norelli.

Romney Launches New TV Ad "Energy"

Today, Mitt Romney's campaign launched a new television ad entitled "Energy." The ad is suppose to highlight Romney's "leadership in turning around numerous companies, the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts." The ad will begin airing in the Granite State today.

This Labor Day I brought my daughter with me to attend a rally in Manchester NH for Senator Barack Obama. The weather was perfect and the crowd was full of positive energy. We were energized as Obama spoke about how we as a people can really have an affect on this election, and possibly the country. Obama and I both know it will take a collection of active people to bring about change, and it is my strongest of feelings that Barack is the perfect candidate to bring about this change, by organizing us Americans and bringing us together in order to make changes that are so desperately needed.

Senator Obama is "my candidate" and I say this strongly. This is the first time I have been active in the election process, and I can truly feel the power of this entire process. Being active now and not just waiting until the primary is over is so important. I have been actively watching events on c-span for other candidates and attending events when possible to show my support for Barack. He may be looked at as a rock star by some, but in my inner most self, I feel he is far more than that. This man (Obama) I feel will be a future historical figure, a man who will bring on change one way or another. It's up to us to decide how . I feel Senator Obama is the right candidate at the right time. I encourage all to seek out his events and go see him in person. Be active in this process like never before!!

Tomorrow is the FOX News Republican debate at UNH. We're told that it's being billed has one of the "largest event of this New Hampshire primary season."

Obama Supporter: Yes, We As A People Are The Answer

This campaign summary was submitted by Michelle Young. Ms. Young is the Tilton town chair for Barack Obama's campaign:

Labor Day in New Hampshire. As we all know from the many news outlets, this weekend traditionally begins the Presidential Primary Season.

My Labor Day began at Veterans Park in Manchester, New Hampshire. The morning was crisp and sunny, and the energy in that park was just amazing. I was one of 1400 people waiting to see and listen to Senator Barack Obama. As Barack, Michelle, and their two daughters made their way to the staging area, "We Are Family" was playing over the PA system, and many young adults were chanting the "Obama '08" Mantra.The rest of us added to the joyful noise by clapping, yelling, and cheering. I was just warming up for the day.

Congressman Paul Hodes was the first to speak. Michelle then went to the podium to introduce her husband. She told us of his consistency as a person, and how he was persistent in all of his undertakings. She talked of his community organizing days, and how he felt that Americans, all Americans were important and capable of extraordinary accomplishments. Senator Obama started his Labor Day Speech by talking about Michelle, how she labors for their family, and honoring all of the work that she does. He reminded us the the American people were not the problem today, and reassured us that we were indeed the answer. Yes, we as a people are the answer.

After his speech, we all made a mad dash for the Labor Day Parade in Milford. I was very proud to be a part of that group, because as I looked around at the 400 Obama supporters, I saw America. We were young and old, black and white, proud men and women, wearing linen dresses, jeans, fancy hats, ball caps, and Grateful Dead bandannas. We were not one of the "cookie cutter" groups from other candidates that watched us having fun and yelling that we were "fired up" while waiting for the parade to begin.

I was very fortunate to be in the small group that walked behind Senator Obama riding in the red convertible, and in front of the two Chevy Suburbans that the Secret Service was driving. It is good day when the Secret Service has your back.

As we walked toward the Town of Milford, our supporters that were sporting drums broke into dance cadences which sent our Obama fans dancing and cheering his praises. I remember at one point, looking back and seeing the sea of 400 supporters coming down the hill behind us, smiling, laughing, and proudly carrying Obama signs. I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps.

The parade ended a mile and a half later, and as I was talking to a fellow supporter and discussing where we could buy a cold soda before walking back up the hill to our vehicles, I caught something out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and saw that the first Maple leaf of fall had fallen and landed only a few inches from my feet

Edwards Returns To NH, Receives Carpenters Endorsement

Yesterday at the Milford Labor Day parade two political worlds collided.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Illinios Senator Barack Obama's universes briefly intersected.

Obama had been chatting with voters when Romney approached him from behind in order to exchange greetings. They briefly chatted with Obama concluding "Well, let's wait until we debate."

State's Largest Community Organization Cuts Through Political Spin with Real Conversation with Candidates Planned

Most presidential candidate debates rarely give voters the whole picture of how the candidate will solve the problems of New Hampshire. The Granite State Organizing Project (GSOP), the state's largest community organization, and its members are working to complete the picture. As the first-in-the-nation primary state, New Hampshire citizens take this privilege and responsibility very seriously. GSOP is arranging an event that will cut through the political spin by translating this access into real answers to questions posed directly by New Hampshire citizens.

The presidential candidates of both parties have been invited to speak to GSOP's membership body in a "Conversation with Our Next President" event at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, September 15, 2007.

New Hampshire residents, like Americans everywhere, want direct answers to the questions affecting our daily lives. Draft Gore Movement Nets 1,000 NH Signatures

The Littleton based Draft Gore movement is started to gain momentum.

Today, the group announced that it was able to gain the signatures of more than 1,000 Granite State voters who want Al Gore to enter the primary.

In a press release, the group's statewide coordinator said "The results of our petition drive indicate that there is a strong undercurrent of support for Al Gore in New Hampshire which is not reflected accurately in polls or in the opinions of visiting out-of-state media pundits."

Obama: We Need To Turn The Page

Today, Barack Obama used a Labor Day rally to hone his message of change versus experience and urged American to "turn the page."

Obama opened his speech by arguing that to solve problems, America must begin with substantive change.

"Because to meet America’s challenges, changing parties isn’t change enough. We need something new. We need to turn the page."

Obama also used the Manchester speech to sharply criticize Hillary Clinton and her argument that her years in Washington enable her to bring real change to America.

Speaking before 1,500 supporters, Obama said “There are those who tout their experience working the system in Washington – but the problem is that the system in Washington isn’t working for us and hasn’t for a long time.”

The Illinois Senator also sought to push back against those who argue he lacks the experience needed to be president.

“There were a couple of guys named Cheney and Rumsfeld who had two of the longest resumes in Washington and they led us into the worst foreign policy fiasco in our history. Time served doesn’t guarantee judgment. A resume does nothing about character.”

He went on to add that “Well I might not have the experience Washington likes, but I believe I have the experience America needs right now.”

Obama also used the speech to discuss his optimistic view of the future, saying “Now, when the folks in Washington hear me speak, this is usually when they start rolling their eyes. ‘Oh, there he goes talking about hope again. He’s so naïve. He’s a hope peddler. He’s a hope-monger.’ Well I stand guilty as charged. I am hopeful about America.”

Ron Paul: A New Hampshire Dark Horse?

Texas Congressman Ron Paul might not be considered a first-tier Republican candidate, but there is growing evidence that he might become the next New Hampshire dark horse presidential candidate.

The Granite State is known for propelling dark-horse candidates on to the national stage. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Gary Hart, Howard Dean and John McCain have all used their primary successes to go from relative obscurity into a national political force.

This is providing inspiration for the Paul campaign because according to the campaign’s field director, Jared Chicoine “New Hampshire has helped long-shot candidates in the past; this is the right state to be a long-shot candidate.”

Using a combination of Internet social network websites and traditional grassroots activism, the once libertarian presidential candidate has been able to win straw polls conducted by the Strafford County GOP and The Coalition of NH Taxpayers. Paul supporters are also present at various Republican events and are active in local GOP circles.

In addition to building grassroots support, Paul is slowly moving up in polls and raising a respectable amount of money.

A recent American Research Group poll showed Paul at 3 percent, which is actually a two percent increase since June. In fact, Paul is beginning to pull away from Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo and catching-up to Sam Brownback and Newt Gingrich.

Paul made political headlines earlier this year when it was discovered that he had raised more first-quarter money, in New Hampshire, then John McCain or Rudy Giuliani. So far, Paul has raised $34,211 in the Granite State, surpassing the fundraising totals of Chris Dodd, Mike Huckabee, Bill Richardson, Duncan Hunter, Joe Biden, Tom Tancredo, Mike Gravel and Sam Brownback.

Congressman Ron Paul might not ever reach first-tier candidate status, but with a message that is appealing to libertarians, conservative Republicans and former Pat Buchanan supporters, Paul’s presence on the campaign trail could become either the story of 2008 or a footnote in history books.

As some of you may or may not have noticed, I have recently been brought on to be an assistant to The Boston Globe's James Pindell and his website "The Primary Source."

A part of my duties will include working on various projects and conducting a regular segment called "Tales from the Trail."
