Clinton Stresses Government Competency

Photo is: ©Chris Fitzgerald/CandidatePhotos.com

Standing in front of a large blue banner that read "Making Government Work For You," Hillary Clinton proposed a comprehensive 10-point plan to reform government. The plan included banning government officials from lobbying the administration, strengthening whistleblower protections, creating a public service academy and cutting 500,000 government contractors. Speaking before a crowd of 200 students, professors and supporters, at St. Anselm College, the New York Senator stressed that "government must lead by example" and a Hillary Clinton administration would "restore competency" in the federal government.

Senator Clinton cited the Bush Administrations "incompetency" as the reason for the failures of Hurricane Katrina and the chaos in Iraq. Mrs. Clinton argued that the Bush Administration favors "friends and supporters" over qualified public servants.

Whether or not this issue will gain traction remains to be seen. However, Jennifer Donahue, Senior Advisor for Political Affairs to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, believes the issue will "resonate among Granite State voters." Donahue also said the issue will allow Senator Clinton to attack President Bush through "a clever tactic, under the umbrella of transparency."

After, the speech Clinton continues her New Hampshire tour with town hall forums entitled "Conversations with Hillary." This will make Senator Clinton's fifth trip to the state.

Party People

From The Hippo:

Party People

An occasional series on the 2008 presidential wannabes and their antics

Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio (D) & Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico (D)

• Seen: Kucinich and Richardson were both at New England College on Wednesday, April 4

• Approximate Crowd Kucinich: Approximately 150 to 175 people attended, mostly college students and middle-aged adults who tend not to wear coats and ties.
Richardson: Approximately 200 people, an equal mix of students, faculty and adults sporting casual business attire.

• Other Media
Kucinich: Associated Press photographer Jim Cole and what appeared to be a videographer from a local cable station.
Richardson: Several still photographers, Fox television and their political correspondent, Carl Cameron, a writer from the Washington Times and a nattily dressed television reporter wearing polished shoes with tassels.

Main Attraction: New England College offered a table full of cookies, brownies, coffee, soda and bottled water.

• Best Line
Kucinich: “The president and the vice president have made statements that violate international law and national law. Is this not the appropriate time to think about impeachment?...Some of my colleagues in Congress say no. I say it is appropriate to have that discussion. Can I have a show of hands?” (About two thirds of the audience raised their hands.)
Richardson: “I believe Congress should go back and de-authorize this war. They authorized it years ago, now they should de-authorize it...I’m not a rock star. I don’t have all the money that all these other candidates have, but I’m going to go door to door, house to house ... all I want from you is to keep your powder dry, wait until you see all the candidates.”

Gist: Kucinich does not travel with a large entourage, nor does he appear to have a contingency of advance people. Richardson, on the other hand, is surrounded by staffers and advance people.

Kucinich wants to be seen as a champion for the middle class and believes the rising cost of health care and the lack of jobs are the two major contributors to the number of bankruptcies in America.

Richardson is quick to point to his experience as a former United Nations ambassador and deal maker and says he believes a diplomatic solution to the Iraq situation is possible. Richardson also noted that he is taking a few days off the campaign trail to travel with a bi-partisan group to North Korea in the hopes of bringing back some remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War more than 50 years ago. — Lisa Brown

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.)
Seen: Guest lecturing Wednesday, April 4, at Dr. Tom Fitzpatrick’s “Business, Society and Economy” class at Saint Anselm College in Manchester.
Approximate crowd: 18
Other media: Connecticut TV and print

Main attraction: Undergraduate business students got the undivided attention of the chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
Quote: “Enjoy every second of it, it’s all downhill after this,” Dodd said, after urging the junior class members to enjoy their last year of college.

Gist: Dodd told students about three lending areas he’s focusing on: the credit card industry, mortgage rates and access to capital. He took questions about Pentagon spending, international trade agreements, immigration and Social Security. Dodd criticized the current administration for not speaking out against Circuit City, which just fired 80 percent of its workers in order to find cheaper employees, and recommended strong financial penalties for companies that hire illegal workers. About the administration’s accumulated public debt, much of it owned by Japan and China, Dodd said, “That’s a dreadful legacy to leave the coming generation.” — Heidi Masek.

Andy Smith: Primary Will Continue To Be Important

UNH pollster-guru Andy Smith believes that the Granite State's primary role will not be dimished. In an AP interview Smith argued that the New Hampshire primary will continue to play an important role because ''There really is no firewall any more. Whoever wins New Hampshire is likely going to win elsewhere. And if you don't win here, there's no time to fix it.'' For the full article, from the AP's Philip Elliot go here:

Retired Generals To Meet With Presidential Candidates

This morning The Concord Monitor had an interesting article. The article focus on the upcoming meeting of retired generals with presidential candidates. Here is a piece of the article and a link:

"Nearly 20 retired generals and admirals will converge on Concord this weekend to hold private meetings with presidential candidates about U.S. detention and interrogation policies.

The meetings will be held at Franklin Pierce Law Center and co-hosted by Dean John Hutson, a retired Navy rear admiral and longstanding critic of Bush administration policies on torture."

U.S. News & World Report: A Quadrennial Wooing Game

"Want to feel loved? Join the New Hampshire legislature.

Every four years, the cast of presidential candidates flood to New Hampshire to woo citizens in the state with the first primary in the country. At the top of their list: getting endorsements from state lawmakers.

"Whether they're the frontrunner or the ones in the back of the pack, they all come a-courtin'," nine-term Republican state Rep. Sherman Packard tells News Desk.

There are enough of them to go around. New Hampshire had the 10th-smallest population in 2005 but has a gargantuan House of Representatives of 400 members, giving it the lowest ration of citizens to lawmakers in the country at one representative for every 3,000 people."

McCain Chats With Bloggers

This afternoon I participated in a blogger conference call with Senator McCain. McCain spend the half-hour discussing his Iraq speech at the Virginia Military Institute. In his opening remarks McCain said that "too often the American people have been misled." However, his trip to Iraq demonstrated that "there are signs of success and the strategy must be given a chance to succeed." Also, during the question-and-answer period McCain said "for four years we have been screwing this [Iraq] up" McCain also promised that as President he would give a war update every two weeks and continue to participate in blogger conference calls. Here are some more quotes from the McCain:

-"I don’t care what effect this position has on my political aspirations"
-"Some in mainstream media will not report positive news out of Iraq. So we must use alternate media like blogs, websites and call-ins to radio stations"
-In regards to troop strength and personnel issues: "There is not a sense of urgency in some quarters, the Pentagon, and the State Department is not yet fully engaged in the conflict."

Richardson: Where's Manchester?

It appears that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson might want to beef up on his New Hampshire geography. Here's a little tidbit from The Concord Monitor:

"Familiarity with New Hampshire's geography is usually a good sign of a committed presidential candidate.

On Wednesday, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson pointed out his correct pronunciation of one city's name: "BER-lin! I said 'Ber-LIN' once, and someone almost took my head off," he told students at New England College in Henniker.

But even the most studious candidate can get tripped up, as Richardson later showed. During a discussion of health care, he asked where veterans had to travel to the nearest VA hospital. It's in Manchester, the crowd said.

"Manchester, Manchester," Richardson said. "Where are we now? Are we near Manchester?"
